# Assets

> Understand maintainable assets and their relationship with interventions, history and costs.

An **asset** is equipment or a physical space on which you can record maintenance.

The asset gives context to history: what failed, what was done, how much it cost and when another intervention is advisable.

## What it represents

| Type in Bold | Examples |
| - | - |
| Equipment | Machine, tool, technical installation or auxiliary equipment. |
| Physical space | Shop floor, area, line, zone or room. |

A machine is not a separate type: record it as **Equipment**. An installation or area does not create another type either: use **Equipment** if you maintain a technical element and **Physical space** if you want to represent a place.

## Hierarchy

You can model assets in a hierarchy if you need to separate main equipment from its components.

| Level | Example |
| - | - |
| Physical space | Assembly line 1 |
| Equipment | Automatic screwdriver |
| Child equipment | Tightening head |

Do not create levels your team will not use. A hierarchy that is too deep makes recording work orders harder.

## Relationship with work orders

You record a work order on an asset. This lets you view history, times, materials, causes, actions and costs by asset.
