# Manufacturing requests

> Understand how requests turn a manufacturing requirement into work awaiting assignment.

A **manufacturing request** indicates that you need to manufacture an item, a quantity and a target date. It does not yet define how the work will be executed on the shop floor.

The request bridges planning and manufacturing orders.

## Request vs order

| Concept | Role |
| - | - |
| Manufacturing request | Defines what needs manufacturing and by when. |
| Manufacturing order | Turns that requirement into executable operations. |
| Assigned quantity | Part of the request covered by orders. |
| Pending quantity | Part that still needs an order or decision. |

The request answers "what is missing". The order answers "how it will be manufactured".

## Source

A request can originate from a planning recommendation or be created manually.

| Source | When it appears |
| - | - |
| Manufacturing assistant | Projected stock falls below the requirement or reorder point. |
| Specific demand | An order or internal requirement needs an item manufactured. |
| Manual decision | Your team decides to create a requirement without waiting for a recommendation. |

If automatic order generation is enabled, Bold creates the MO when recording the request if the item is active, has a valid primary recipe and all required recipe inputs are resolved. If any condition is not met, the request remains pending for manual review.

## Customer and requester

A request can link to a customer. In that case, the requester shows the customer's name at the time of linking and changes only if you change the customer.

If there is no customer, the requester is optional free text. Requests created from the manufacturing assistant or without a requester leave it empty.

| Source | Customer and requester |
| - | - |
| Manufacturing assistant | No customer or requester. |
| Specific demand: sales order line to order | The order's customer. You cannot edit it from the request. |
| Specific demand: material for an MO | Customer and requester from the source MO. You cannot edit them from the request. |
| Manual decision | Optional customer or optional free text. |

Each MO copies the customer and requester from its request when created. If you later change the request, existing MOs retain the original values.

## Statuses

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Pending assignment | The entire quantity still awaits conversion into orders. |
| Partially assigned | Some orders cover part of the quantity. |
| Assigned | Manufacturing orders cover the quantity. |
| Cancelled | The requirement is no longer active. |

If the request already has an assigned quantity, do not reduce the requested quantity below it. The request must continue to explain why the related orders exist.

## What to review before creating orders

| Data | Why it matters |
| - | - |
| Item | Must exist and represent the manufacturable variant. |
| Quantity | Defines the requirement's scope. |
| Required date | Guides planning, sequencing and priority. |
| Valid recipe | Allows conversion of the request into executable work. |
| Critical materials | Can constrain when to release or sequence orders. |
