# Pause reasons and interruptions

> Understand how to classify manufacturing stoppages and their effects on execution, analysis and OEE.

An **interruption** is an actual stoppage during execution. The **pause reason** classifies why work stopped.

Use pause reasons to understand time losses, separate planned stoppages from incidents and analyze patterns by station, process or shift.

## Concepts

| Concept | What it represents |
| - | - |
| Pause reason | Configurable category explaining a stoppage. |
| Interruption | Actual record of start, end, duration and context. |
| Paused operation | Operation temporarily stopped until resumed. |
| Paused group | Operation group stopped as an operational block. |
| Comment | Free-form detail that helps interpret the stoppage. |

The reason answers "why it stopped". The interruption answers "when it happened and how long it lasted".

## Where they are used

| Place | Use |
| - | - |
| Operations | Pause and resume a specific manufacturing stage. |
| Operation groups | Pause a block of operations executed together. |
| Workstations | Analyze recurring stoppages by resource. |
| Dashboards | Review duration, frequency and effect on OEE. |

You can configure reasons so operators select options relevant to their environment. Avoid long lists with causes the station never uses.

## Cause types

Define reasons with a granularity that supports action.

| Cause type | Examples |
| - | - |
| Operational wait | Missing material, missing instructions, waiting for quality. |
| Resource | Breakdown, tool change, cleaning, setup. |
| People | Break, shift change, unavailable support. |
| Quality | Review, rework, rejection awaiting a decision. |
| External | Supply outage, logistics block, supplier incident. |

Do not turn every comment into a reason. Use comments for specific details and reasons for repeatable analysis.

## Relationship with statuses

When you pause an operation or group, its status becomes **Paused**. On resuming, the interruption closes and work returns to **In progress**.

An open interruption must be closed before interpreting actual times. If pauses remain open, dashboards can show incomplete durations.

Read [Manufacturing statuses](/en/concepts/manufacturing/manufacturing-statuses) for the relationships between pauses, orders, operations and groups.
