## Users and employees

A user controls access. An employee represents operational work. They can be linked, but they are different concepts.

Use a user to sign in to Bold and receive permissions. Use an employee to record labor, calculate costs, or associate operational work with a person. See [Users, permission profiles, and permissions](/en/concepts/control-panel/users-permission-profiles-and-permissions) for access management.
