# Stock counts and adjustments

> Distinguish stock counts, adjustments and movements to correct stock with traceability.

**Stock counts** and **adjustments** correct discrepancies between recorded stock and physical reality. They should explain a discrepancy, not replace operations that have a source.

## Stock count

A stock count compares expected stock with a physical count. You use it for closing periods, audits or area reviews.

| Data | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Previous stock | Quantity recorded before counting. |
| Counted quantity | Physical reading. |
| Expected adjustment | Difference applied when you finish. |
| Scope | Included locations, items or lots. |

Use stock counts when there are several lines, several locations or a formal counting process.

## Stock count statuses

| Status | Meaning |
| :- | :- |
| Pending | The stock count exists but has no recorded readings yet. |
| In progress | At least one line has been counted or edited. |
| Finished | Bold applied stock adjustments, and the count is locked to preserve the audit trail. |

## Stock adjustment

An adjustment corrects an isolated discrepancy with a known cause. It usually affects a specific item, location and lot combination.

Use it for small corrections or clear incidents. If the discrepancy affects a whole area, use a stock count.

## Internal movement

An internal movement changes where material is but should not change the item's total quantity.

| Case | Correct concept |
| - | - |
| The material exists but is in another location | Internal movement. |
| The material was counted and a quantity is missing | Stock count or adjustment. |
| A receipt has not been recorded | Receipt. |
| Consumption has not been recorded | Corresponding consumption or execution. |

## Risks

A manual adjustment can hide receipt, consumption, shipment or location errors. Before adjusting, review recent movements, pending documents and lots.
