# Configure units of measure

> Create the units you will use as the main or alternative units for items.

**Units of measure** specify how you quantify each item. Configure them before creating items tracked in kilograms, liters, meters or other units that differ from the default unit.

**Path:** **Catalog > Units of measure**

## Create a unit

  <Step title="Start creating the unit">
    Click **Create new**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the code">
    Enter a short **Code**, such as `kg`, `l` or `m`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the name">
    Enter the **Name** the user will see, such as `Kilograms`, `Liters` or `Meters`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the unit">
    Click **Create**.
  </Step>

You can then select the unit as the main unit when creating an item, or add it as an alternative unit with its equivalence.

  Decimal precision is configured for each item, rather than for the unit of measure.
