# Define family properties

> Create the characteristics that distinguish items within the same family.

**Path:** **Catalog > Properties > Add new**

Create reusable **properties** that describe your variants before adding many items. In Bold, a property represents a characteristic such as color, dimensions, material or finish. See [Properties](/en/concepts/catalog/properties) to learn how they relate to families and items.

**Name:** identify the characteristic you want to record, rather than its specific value. For example: `Height`, `Color`, `Width`, `Material` or `Diameter`.

**Data type (value):** a property can use free text, whole numbers, decimals, yes/no, option selection or date/time.

<Note>
  **Example for an industrial fastener family**

  * **Material (options):** carbon steel, A2 stainless steel, A4 stainless steel or brass *(required)*.
  * **Metric size (diameter):** M4, M5, M6, M8, M10 or M12 *(required)*.
  * **Length (mm):** numeric field *(required)*.
  * **Head type (options):** hexagonal, Allen, cylindrical or countersunk.
  * **Thread pitch (option):** fine or standard.
  * **Surface treatment (options):** zinc plating, bichromate coating, bluing or untreated.
