# Group items into families

> Create a family, group related items and define the properties they must share.

In Bold, a **family** groups items that belong to the same commercial or technical concept. Create one when you want to organize variants under a single family.

<Info>
  If you only have a standalone item and do not need to group variants, you can work directly with the item.

## Effect of properties

When you assign a property to a family, all its items must have a value for it. If it is missing, the item is marked as invalid until you complete the information.

You should not have two active items with the same family and property values. If they represent exactly the same physical element, review their related manufacturing orders, requests and recipes before consolidating them. If they differ, a property is missing to explain the difference.
