# Create labels and codes

> Prepare printable labels with codes for the objects supported by Bold.

Create labels and codes to identify or scan physical elements. A readable label helps with receipts, movements, manufacturing and shipments.

## Decide what to label

**Path:** **Control panel > Designs**

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the object">
    Choose an available type: manufacturing operation, operations group, operations of an MO, lot, item, package, receipt line, employee or workstation.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Define the code">
    Use a stable, unique reference for scanning. Avoid codes that change frequently.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a template">
    Complete the basic label data:

    * In **Name**, enter a descriptive reference, such as `Lot label 100x50` or `Workstation QR codes`.
    * In **Canvas width (mm)** and **Canvas height (mm)**, specify the paper dimensions.
    * In **Template type**, choose the corresponding Bold element, such as **Item**, **Lot**, **Container** or **Workstation**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add elements">
    In the design area, drag and place the elements you need:

    * **Barcode:** represents a variable, such as an item or lot code, in a linear format a scanner can read.
    * **Fixed text:** displays titles, field names or notices that do not change between prints.
    * **QR code:** represents a variable in a two-dimensional code compatible with suitable cameras and readers.
    * **Rectangle:** visually groups or separates information.
    * **Variable text:** inserts data from the labeled object, such as the item name, quantity or target date.
    * **Image:** adds static elements, such as a logo, pictogram or diagram.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save and test the label">
    Save the template and print a test label. Scan it with the shop floor or warehouse readers and check that the codes and text are readable before using it in production.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Common uses

| Label | Use |
| - | - |
| Item | Identify material during receipt or preparation. |
| Lot | Maintain traceability during consumption, shipment or stock counts. |
| Package | Move a grouped physical unit. |
| Receipt line | Identify material during receipt. |
| Employee or workstation | Identify the resource by scanning. |
| Operation or operations group | Locate work by scanning. |

<Tip>
  Prioritize labels that prevent repeated errors. Do not label everything if the team will not scan or read it during the process.
