# Schedule preventive maintenance

> Schedule preventive work orders generated at a defined frequency.

**Preventive maintenance** defines rules for creating recurring work orders. A schedule is not a work order: it specifies when one should be generated and what initial information it should contain.

**Path:** **Maintenance > Preventive maintenance > Create schedule**

<Steps>
  <Step title="Identify the schedule">
    Add a name that identifies the scheduled maintenance.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select the asset">
    Specify the asset on which it should be performed.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Define the cause">
    Select the reason for the maintenance.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Configure frequency">
    Specify how often it should be performed. Use **Weekdays** to generate it Monday through Friday.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Configure the time">
    Enter the planned time or times for performing it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select the generation policy">
    Choose how Bold should act if an open work order already exists.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Generation policies

| Policy | Behavior |
| - | - |
| Always generate | Creates a work order whenever due, even if another from the same schedule is open. |
| Skip if there is an open work order | Does not create a new work order if one from that schedule is open. Increments the skipped counter. |

<Info>
  An open work order is pending, in progress, or paused.
</Info>

<Note>
  **Example:** you want to inspect packaging machine ENV-01 every Monday at 06:00. Create a **Weekly inspection** cause, add actions such as **Check pressure**, **Clean filter**, and **Attach photo if there is wear**, and use **Skip if there is an open work order**. If the previous week's work order is still open, Bold does not create another.
</Note>

## Enable, disable, and delete

You can change these options from the **Actions** column in the main preventive maintenance view or from the schedule details.

* If a schedule is enabled (green), Bold generates work orders when the next occurrence arrives.
* Disabling it (red) preserves its configuration but stops generating work orders and clears the next pending generation.
* Enabling it again makes Bold recalculate the next generation from the rule.
* Deleting it disables it and you cannot recover it. Work orders it generated still link to it, and it appears in read-only mode with the **Deleted** label.

In the main view, you can enable **Hide disabled** and filter or sort by status, asset, cause, and frequency from the table header.

## Generate a work order manually

Click **Generate now** from the schedule details, or the rocket icon in the **Actions** column of the main view, and confirm. Bold creates the work order using the current configuration. From the details, it takes you to the work order; from the main view, you stay in the list and the alert links to the created work order. This counts as a generation but does not change the next generation or consider the policy.

In the details, the **Generated work orders** tab shows work orders from the schedule, excluding cancelled ones.

## Common problems

| Problem | What to check |
| - | - |
| The work order is not generated | Check whether the schedule is enabled, the next generation, and the time zone. |
| Occurrences are skipped | The policy may be **Skip if there is an open work order**, with an earlier work order still open. |
| More work orders are generated than expected | Check whether the policy allows generation on every occurrence. |
| An expected duplicate does not appear | Bold does not duplicate work orders for the same schedule and occurrence if a non-cancelled one already exists. |
| The additional cause is not saved | It may be duplicated or match the main cause. |
| The next generation does not appear | The schedule may be disabled or deleted. |
