# Adapt manufacturing to variants

> Adapt operations, materials, instructions, and inspections to each manufactured variant.

Design a single manufacturing routing for several items in the same family. In Bold, **conditions** show or hide operations, materials, instructions, or inspections according to the manufactured item's properties. See [Recipes and versions](/en/concepts/manufacturing/recipes-and-versions) to understand how conditions apply within a recipe.

You can apply conditions in four parts of the recipe:

## Apply conditions to operations

Use them when an entire stage applies only to certain item variants.

<Note>
  **Example:** the *Painting* operation should activate only if the family's *Finish* property requires painting. If the customer orders a bicycle frame with a polished aluminum finish, the system skips this stage.
</Note>

## Apply conditions to inputs

Use them when a material is consumed only for some items in the family.

<Note>
  **Example:** configure two material inputs in the same operation: one for *Red paint* and another for *Blue paint*. By conditioning each input on *Color*, the MO only loads, shows, and deducts from inventory the color that bicycle requires.
</Note>

## Apply conditions to steps

Use them when a work instruction should appear only for certain variants.

<Note>
  **Example:** during assembly, you decide only bicycles with **premium finish** require an additional *Apply protective wax* step. For standard models, this step does not appear on the operator's screen.
</Note>

## Apply conditions to inspections

Use them to adapt inspection to the manufactured variant.

<Note>
  **Example:** a water pump pressure test at 15 bar activates only if **Model** equals `Professional / Hospitality`. The operator performs this test only for a machine intended for cafés.
</Note>

## Add a condition

**Source (Property / Production order context):** indicates where Bold should find the data for evaluating the rule.

* **Property:** item characteristic, such as material, color, or size.
* **Production order context:** data from a specific order, such as requester, quantity, or notes.

**Property/Field:** select the family property or manufacturing-order context field to compare.

**Operator:** defines how the source is compared with the expected value, such as **Equal to**, **Not equal to**, **Contains**, **Starts with**, or **Ends with**.

**Value/Option:** enter the value the condition must meet. For example: property `Material`, operator `Equal to`, and value `Carbon`.
