# Set plant working hours and holidays

> Define when the plant works, add its holidays, and give an area or a machine its own hours.

The plant's working hours indicate when you can manufacture. Bold uses them to plan operations on each station, to calculate the scheduled time of the OEE, and to know when employees without their own shift work.

These hours are part of the **plant calendar**: each **calendar** has its own **weekly schedule** and uses a **holiday calendar**. Everything without its own calendar uses the **general calendar**. See [Plant calendar](https://docs.bold-factory.com/en/concepts/manufacturing/plant-calendar.md) for the full model.

## Before you start

* To edit calendars and holidays, you need the `People.ShiftScheduling.Write` permission (**HR > Shifts > Edit** in the permission profile).
* To assign a calendar to an area, a line or a station, you need the `Production.Workstations.Write` permission (**Production > Workstations > Edit** in the permission profile). To see the **Calendar** field, you also need `People.ShiftScheduling.Read` (**HR > Shifts > View**).
* Check the company **Time zone**. The plant's hours apply in that time zone. See [Configure the company](https://docs.bold-factory.com/en/guides/control-panel/configure-the-company.md).

You can configure the plant calendar with any subscription plan.

## Define the hours of the whole plant

**Path:** **Control panel > Plant > Calendar > Calendars**

Open the calendar with the **General** tag, the first one in the list. Bold creates it with the manufacturing working hours your company had configured. Review them in the **Weekly schedule** section, which also shows the hours per week, and adjust them if the plant works in other time slots.

**1. Add the periods of each day**

Each day of the week has its own row. Click **Add period** and enter the start and end time. You can add several periods to the same day, as long as they do not overlap.

**2. Review overnight periods**

If a period ends at or before its start time, Bold treats it as ending on the following day and marks it with **+1 day**. For example, from 22:00 to 06:00.

**3. Leave non-working days without periods**

A day without periods shows as **Closed**.

**4. Save the weekly schedule**

Click **Save changes**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Example:** in a factory that operates 24 hours, machines are switched on Monday at 06:00 and not switched off until Saturday at 06:00. Add a period from 06:00 to 06:00 from Monday to Friday. Each one shows **+1 day**.

## Add the holidays

**Path:** **Control panel > Plant > Calendar > Holidays**

Each date in the holiday calendar replaces that day's weekly schedule. The holidays of the whole plant are those of the holiday calendar selected in the general calendar's **Holidays** field. Open it from the **Holidays** tab, or from the general calendar's page with **Edit holidays**, next to that field.

**1. Choose the day**

Go to the month and click the day. The **Holiday on** dialog opens with the date.

**2. Indicate how the plant works that day**

Choose **Closed** if the plant does not work. Choose **Special hours** and add its periods if it works only some hours, for example from 08:00 to 14:00 on 24 December.

**3. Save the holiday**

Click **Save**. The day shows as **Closed** or **Special hours 8:00–14:00**, also in the year's **Holidays in** list.

To remove a holiday, click the day and choose **Remove holiday**.

Several calendars can use the same holidays: changes affect every calendar that uses them.

Employees without their own holiday calendar also follow the holidays of the general calendar.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Bold stores each kind of day as a work day named **Closed** or **Special hours** with its hours, and reuses one that already exists. Those work days also appear in **People > Work days**.

## Give an area or a machine its own hours

Use a calendar of its own when part of the plant works in other time slots. For example, the `Machining` area works 24/7 while `Assembly` works a single shift.

**1. Create the calendar**

In the **Calendars** tab, click **Create calendar** and enter a recognizable name, such as `24/7`. In **Holidays**, choose the holiday calendar it must use; by default, the one of the general calendar. The calendar starts without a schedule.

To start from the schedule and holidays of another calendar, click **Copy calendar** on its row in the list, or **Copy** on its page, and enter the name of the copy.

**2. Adjust its weekly schedule**

After you create it, Bold opens the new calendar. Change the periods in **Weekly schedule** and click **Save changes**. If you copied it from another one, its schedule is independent: changing it does not affect the original calendar.

**3. Assign it to the area, line or station**

In **Production > Resources**, edit the area, line or station. In the **Calendar** field, click **Change calendar** and choose the calendar.

**4. Review what inherits it**

The lines, areas and stations below it without their own calendar start using the new calendar within seconds.

The **Calendar** field shows the calendar each item uses and where it comes from:

| Text | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `<name> · assigned here` | The item has its own calendar. |
| `<name> · inherited from <area>` | It inherits it from its line or area. |
| `<name> · general calendar` | It uses the general calendar. |

To make an area or a station use the calendar of the level above again, click **Change calendar** and choose **Inherit**, which shows the calendar it will inherit.

> [!NOTE]
>
> While only one calendar exists, the **Change calendar** button does not appear on items without their own calendar. Create the second calendar first.

### Reduced days with another schedule

A holiday date applies equally to all the calendars that use that holiday calendar. If an area with another weekly schedule needs different hours on a reduced day, create a holiday calendar for it with that date and use it in its calendar.

For example, if the general calendar works from 08:00 to 14:00 on 24 December and `Machining` must stop at 22:00, create a holiday calendar in the **Holidays** tab and add 24 December with **Special hours** from 00:00 to 22:00. Then open the `24/7` calendar, choose that holiday calendar in **Holidays**, and click **Save changes**.

## Change the general calendar

If another calendar must be the general one, open it in the **Calendars** tab and click **Mark as general**. The previous one stops being general, the **General** tag moves to the new one, and everything without its own calendar starts using it. The general calendar cannot be deleted.

## Check the result

* Update open production plans. A plan only picks up schedule changes when you update it.
* If the general calendar has no working period, Bold cannot create or update production plans.
* Review [OEE by workstation](https://docs.bold-factory.com/en/guides/manufacturing/view-oee-by-workstation.md): the scheduled time of each station comes from its calendar, with its holidays.
