An asset is equipment or a physical space on which you can record maintenance. The asset gives context to history: what failed, what was done, how much it cost and when another intervention is advisable.

What it represents

A machine is not a separate type: record it as Equipment. An installation or area does not create another type either: use Equipment if you maintain a technical element and Physical space if you want to represent a place.

Hierarchy

You can model assets in a hierarchy if you need to separate main equipment from its components. Do not create levels your team will not use. A hierarchy that is too deep makes recording work orders harder.

Relationship with work orders

You record a work order on an asset. This lets you view history, times, materials, causes, actions and costs by asset.
